The musicians on the album called; ‘A Smile At Gigi’

Elise ten Hoor - vocals

Elise is a wonderful presence on stage. She has everything that anyone could ever wish for.
A powerful and unique voice that manages to touch you and she is gifted with lots of flair too, all of which immediately has you in its embrace.

Songs:
Hold On The Line
Feel So Fine
Sorrow
Session

Backing vocals

Maaike Janssen - vocals

Maaike always surprises me again and again, she has an unbelievable range!
I’ve had the privilege of being allowed to work and write songs with Maaike for quite some time now.

Songs:
I Need A Man
Another Day Another Night
It’s Gonna Change
Who Are You?

Text It’s Gonna Change

Backing vocals

Petra Schreurs - vocals

Petra has a voice that just cannot be denied, one that takes you with it. Very experienced and with her credentials as ‘singing master’ it fitted right into my street on this project.

Songs:
Behind The Lie
Changes
Wanna Cry Out
Dust To Dust

Backing vocals

Hessel Hoornveld - rhythm-guitar and vocals, songwriter and initiator

I was allowed to compose all of the music and most of the text for this project.
Some of it had been able to mature for years whilst other parts were plucked out of the cosmos more recently.

Also, the producing part of things was something I was pleased to do. I was provided by each person with the necessary energy from which I could make a beautiful, robust album, one that transports, hits home and takes you on a journey.
Songs that are constructed from solid rock, rock-funk, nice groove-hitting pop songs, a ballad, an emotion.

Song:
Milly

Backing vocals on ‘I Need A Man’.

Producer.

Ton Dijkman - drums

It is a privilege for me to work with Ton on this album. My favourite drummer. Ton, who knows how to lay a foundation that nobody else can.
A warm person who wants to share music with you.
It isn’t without reason that he is the most asked for studio drummer in the Netherlands. It’s worth knowing that Ton has a voice that you say ‘Sir’ to as well, and he writes beautiful songs.

Hans Voerman - keyboards

Hans knows how to let a Hammond organ erupt and just as easily let it tease too. A busy musical jack-of-all-trades who knows how to let tapestries of strings and other sneaky sounds melt together in a most fantastic manner. With here and there some solo extravagances in just the right places.

Wilbrand Meischke – bass guitar

As far as I was concerned I knew for sure whom I wanted as bassist.
In my view Wilbrand is the absolute top, certainly as far as adding substance to the songs that I write is concerned.
To share the passion for making music with Wilbrand is a real pleasure. What’s more, he really knows how to enjoy life and loves good wines. That’s a lot of inspiration.

Hans Elmers - guitar and recording technician

Hans is the logical consequence of wandering about on this globe and making music. We have known one another for more than thirty years and, what we do, always remains a challenge. Stimulus and appreciation are always part of the bundle of joy. In musical terms we don’t need to explain anything anymore, a nod is enough.
I admire Hans not only as a person, but also because of his unequalled guitar playing and the many styles ‘a la Hans’, that he conjures up and expresses through his fingers. Text:
Behind The Lie, Sorrow

Lucia Hebers - percussion, bass guitar and drums

In her music Lucia is all about passion, being driven and musically tighter than an atomic clock as she is. Lucia plays drums as well as bass guitar on ‘Hold On The Line’, and the way she plays percussion, on all songs, can be described as more than tasteful!
Lucia... an exceptional person.

Voices Extreme - vocals (Maaike, Petra and Elise)

’Voices Extreme’ came about, in fact, through an expression of surprise. I’m used to quite a lot in the studio, but what they created with their backing vocals is a rare pleasure for me. Taking all backing vocals for their own account, just as if they’d never done anything else, whereas, they had never worked together before. Three talents who get together for the first time in the studio and who give you the feeling that they’ve already known one another for years and years.
Choirs taking form on the spot in the studio and creating atmospheres that only they can.
You feel how privileged you are as producer, through being allowed to work with these extraordinary voices (read; female vocalists), and by being able to occupy, momentarily, a timeless realm in another dimension.

Hessel met Hans Elmers - Opname Studio Lucan
Hessel with Hans Elmers - Recording Studio Lucan

Studio Lucan with its 24 track on 2" tape and Sony mixing panel, lovely analogue. Wonderful to be able to play everything in total peace, all (sometimes searing ha ha!) with Hans and his analogue ears on the knobs and dials. The peaceful surroundings in Winsum with a room for relaxing. A studio where I’m always glad to go to for recording and where I find Hans and Lucia are always ready and prepared to work songs out or to take part in playing them. What a luxury!

Hessel with Michiel Hoogenboezem - Mixing Studio ‘Mix aan de Hand’

Never could have imagined, after 30 years, working with Michiel again, on this project.
Years ago, Michiel and I began sometime in the ‘Bleu Tape Studio’ in Tjallleberd.
When I sent Michiel the analogue recordings he was immediately prepared to do the mix of all songs in his own studio in Wergea nearby Leeuwarden, housed in a wonderful farm that looks out over the Frisian landscape. Transferred the analogue recordings to ‘Protools’. It is a joy to experience how the Netherlands’s most successful producer leaves your songs completely for what they are, whilst adding an extra something to them that only Michiel is able to do. Thanks maestro!

Darius van Helfteren - Mastering Wisseloord Studios

Darius is mastering technician in Netherlands’s most famous studios that also has an international reputation. Many of the greatest artists in the world have recorded their albums there. Wisseloord is not unknown to me and it is the logical outcome to have the mastering done there in order to round off everything for the album. Mastering is a skill in itself and Darius is a person who more than understands his profession.
